Boys & Girls Club SoZo Teen Center activities focus on providing youth with the essential skills and support they need to become productive, successful, and healthy young adults. As the Watertown area’s only free, drop-in facility for youth between grades seven through 12, the Center strives to provide a safe environment for teens during afterschool and early evening hours while offering enriching programs encouraging academic success, healthy lifestyle habits, and the development of life skills.
The Boys & Girls Club SoZo Teen Center’s programming has expanded its focus on academic success and enrichment. Our homework assistance and tutoring programs allow at-risk students to receive the help they need in a setting they can feel comfortable in. This ensures students stay in school and complete the curriculums needed to progress successfully onto higher education or skilled employment.
The Boys & Girls Club SoZo Teen Center also provides programs that help participants develop character, healthy habits, and life skills.
Opportunities for Growth at SoZo:
- CREATING projects with hands on opportunities;
- WORKING TOGETHER to achieve success that could not be accomplished individually;
- BEING CHALLENGED to step out of your comfort zone and try something you've never done before.
Part of our Student Incentive Program, the Student Zone holds participants accountable for their schoolwork. Points are given for receiving tutoring, bringing in homework assignments, and submitting report cards. Students accumulate points during the school year to earn prizes.
Our Teen Center Tutoring Program creates opportunities in which the youth are also encouraged to improve their overall academic performance. Working together, one-on-one, or in group settings, volunteer tutors and students concentrate on core subjects including Math, English/Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Foreign Languages. To accommodate the needs of the student and the tutor, the sessions may be held at various public locations throughout the Watertown area. As a result of the tutoring, the teens become more engaged and invested in their education. With improved grades comes improved self-esteem and self-confidence which helps them stay in school and broaden their goals.

Culinary Arts Program:
The Culinary Arts Program allows area teens the opportunity to expand their skills by integrating technology in the kitchen. This Program is offered to six teens at a time and occurs six times a year.
Creative Design Program:
The Creative Design Program is a multi-media training and skill utilization program which allows students the opportunity to create different products by using design software.
Both the Culinary Arts Program and Creative Design Program are designed to strengthen the teen's life skills through activities including culinary arts and creative/graphic design, and utilizing collaborative relationships with local businesses in both fields. The Teen Center strives to broaden program participants' opportunities.
The ability to understand, utilize, and integrate technology into careers is a key aspect of knowledge and growth in youth today. Both programs are designed to increase the employability of these targeted high-risk youth and open paths and opportunities they may consider for their futures.
